Configural reasoning and discourse development when solving empirical problems in a geometrical context Razonamiento configural y desarrollo del discurso en la resolución de problemas empíricos en contexto geométrico Saorín Villa, Antonio Torregrosa Gironés, Germán Quesada Vilella, Humberto Razonamiento configural Expansión discursiva Problemas empíricos Geometría y álgebra Configural reasoning Discourse expansion Empirical problems Geometry and algebra The aim of this study is to identify the existing relationships in the cognitive processes involved in the resolution of empirical problems in a geometrical context, drawing on the configural reasoning perspective, and to analyze how students develop their written discourses to reach the solution of these problems. We pay attention to the written answers of 33 students belonging to the Spanish first year bachelor's degree and which were given for two empirical problems. The results show the students' tendency to ignore the geometrical configuration presented, after establishing, in the algebraical register, the necessary and sufficient relations that solve the problem. Additionally in the development of the discourse, it is revealed that the transition from the accumulation to the substitution mode in the reasoning process leads towards a valid solution establishment, as well as the influence of the initial configuration on the outcome of the configural reasoning process. El objetivo de este estudio es identificar relaciones entre los procesos cognitivos involucrados en la resolución de problemas geométricos empíricos, desde la perspectiva del razonamiento configural, y el modo como los estudiantes desarrollan sus discursos escritos para comunicar la solución. Analizamos las respuestas escritas de 33 estudiantes de primero de Bachillerato a dos problemas empíricos. Los resultados muestran la tendencia de los estudiantes a ignorar la configuración geométrica presentada una vez establecidas en registro algebraico las relaciones necesarias y suficientes que permiten resolver el problema. Además, se pone de manifiesto, en el desarrollo del discurso, la transición desde el modo de acumulación al modo de sustitución en los razonamientos que permiten establecer una solución válida, así como la influencia de la configuración inicial en el desenlace del razonamiento configural.
