El pasado día 2 de diciembre de 2015, el Congreso Colombiano aprobó el proyecto de Ley 172, radicado el 3 de Septiembre de 2014. Con la aprobación de este texto legal, Colombia se une a los países que reconocen expresamente a los animales en su ordenamiento jurídico como seres sintientes, siguiendo así el camino iniciado por el Tratado de Funcionamiento de la Unión Europea y la reciente modificación del Code Civil francés. Con la finalidad de garantizar una protección adecuada a su condición, la nueva Ley colombiana, modifica los articulados del Código Civil (1887) en cuanto a la clasificación de las cosas, el Estatuto Nacional de Protección de los Animales (1989) en cuanto a su régimen sancionador y el Código Penal (2000) al cual le añade el título “DE LOS DELITOS CONTRA LOS ANIMALES. Delitos contra la vida, la integridad física y emocional de los animales.”
