The expulsion of the Society of Jesus from the Spanish American colonies has been a subject of interest both for the moment at which it occurred, and its possible implications. This refers not only to that which has already been more or less exhaustively written about or analyzed, but also to that which can be suspected. The case of Cuba is suggestive in many ways since the history of the Jesuits’ settling on the island reveals a curious relationship between the aspirations of the island oligarchy (in particular, the Havanese) and the increasing interest on the part of the Society to settle both homes and schools in Havana.
