Carrera de méritos y representaciones sociales en América Latina: un ensayo comparativo para la primera mitad del siglo XIX

Evelyne Sánchez, Gabriela Dalla Corte

This work is a comparative effort on Latin American social representations and specifically deals with the significance attributed to personal merits during the first half of the 19th century. The hypothesis is that reflection on personal merits was a central matter in the assessment of individual possibilities in order to gain access to power in geographical areas which had since the early l9th century been attempting to leave behind their colonial past. The incidence of content attributed to merits allows one to access the perceptions of the subjects studied, Spaniards located in Buenos Aires and Puebla, expressed in “personal” type documents such as correspondence.
