Estructuras, movilización afrocubana y clientelas en un hinterland cubano: Cienfuegos 1895-1906

Michael Zeuske

The region of the sugar hinterland of Cienfuegos and the old province of Las Villas or Santa Clara (1878) are essential for the three fundamental processes of Cuban history between 1880 and 1910. These geographical spaces in the centre of Cuba played a very important role in the slavery abolition of slavery (1886) and its consequences, in restructuring the sugar industry, and even more in the “construction” of the Cuban State.
In the process of the political transformation of the colonial status into the Republican State, the province was an essential core. An important focus for the mobilization for independence and the destruction of the Spanish military power, and for the “construction” of national power.
