Los caminos del descontento. O de cómo los novohispanos dejaron de serlo

This article examines the different ways in which New Spaniards disaffected with the colonial regime not only demonstrated their intent to change the status quo but also tried to implement it. They resorted to various forms of action outside of the system, which went from the writing of anonymous lampoons, and the organization of both conspiracies and secret societies to armed rebellion. They also fought within the system, taking advantage of the many possibilities for political action that were opened to them with the imperial crisis of 1808, especially the establishment of the constitutional system in 1812. It was not until they realized the impossiblility of attaining their goals while being a part of the Spanish empire that they decided to break away from it and obtain their independence.
