"¿Pues para qué son los papeles...?": imágenes y devociones novohispanas en los siglos XVII y XVIII

The Jesuit Francisco de Florencia (c. 1620-1695) wrote a series of works exalting the principle miraculous devotions of the New Spain as signs of divine grace. In the absence of written documents to validate the origins of these devotions, Florencia emphasized the usage of images as historical documents. In the first part of this article, I wish to analyse Florencia’s work for the way in which he used images as visual documents, and in the second section, I will discuss fur[her aspects of the pictorical representations of these colonial devotions.
