La población y la crisis del imperio

Nicolás Sánchez-Albornoz

In this paper we analyse the relationship established between the population, the economic elements and the indigenous rebellions in the Spanish colonies in the last decades of the XVIIIth century. We focus on some questions about the widely mantained argument which suggests that there was a close relationship between economic and demographical crisis and colonial insurrections. In a different way, this paper analyses different elements (race social structure, migration movements or the urbanization process) in order to try to demonstrate that between critical conjuncture (demographical o economic crisis) and emancipation process in the Spanish colonies there is a dissociation and not a direct relationship.
