Latin America is a continent with several densely populated cities where an important
part of this population has no access to a suitable household. Colombia reflects such situation at local scale, facing a common issue for both scenarios: the imminent
construction of massive household projects. This implies an intense consumption of both energy and materials to supply the construction process itself, but also the
consumption of natural resources along the lifetime of such buildings. This paper
shows how this challenge may and must be faced, with utmost consideration for both
design and materialization of buildings to be built at medium term. Natural ventilation
and lighting; smart water management; eco-materials; friendly urbanism and
landscape design among other variables, are inherent to these projects at regional
