Artificial intelligence (AI) has made a radical breakthrough in the field of communication. From the release of Stability. ai’s Stable Diffusion text-to-image program code and the popularization of other similar programs such as OpenAI’s Dall-e, or MidJourney, to the development of editing tools such as Runway, sound creation tools such as Harmonai, or text and dialog creation tools such as GPT-3/4 and its most popular form, ChatGPT, the world of communication has experienced an intense shake-up, both at the academic and professional levels. There are many open debates about how AI will impact the future of audiovisual creation and production. This letters’ monography aims to bring together the works of communication researchers who address the debate on how AI is transforming all aspects of digital content creation.

Frederic Guerrero-Solé, Pompeu Fabra University

Frederic Guerrero-Solé. He holds degrees in Theoretical Physics and Slavic Philology from the University of Barcelona, and a PhD in Communications from the Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), is Professor of Communication Theories at UPF. He is a professor and researcher at the Audiovisual Communication Research Group (UNICA), in the Department of Communication at UPF. The fields in which he teaches are the sociology of communication, intercultural communication and quantitative methods. Regarding research, his lines of interest are focused on the sociology of communication, the effects of the media, social networks and artificial intelligence.

Coloma Ballester, Pompeu Fabra University

Coloma Ballester. She is Full Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Department of Information and Communication Technologies of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, where she coordinates the Intelligent Multimodal Vision Analysis (previously, Image Processing and Computer Vision) Group. Her research has been devoted to the development of models and algorithms for image processing and computer vision and to their mathematical analysis. She is currently interested in both model-based and data-driven strategies for the automatic analysis and understanding of visual content, sometimes involving modalities beyond vision, such as natural language and audio. She and her collaborators develop model-based and deep learning approaches, algorithms and innovative digital technologies to address real-world problems and applications, together with their theoretical análisis.
