Social media and fact-checking platforms against disinformation about COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated an unprecedented health and com-munication crisis. Through digital platforms, there has been a huge circula-tion of false, inaccurate or decontextualized information about the corona-virus. Among them, it is worth mentioning the rumors, hoaxes and conspira-cy theories about (1) the origin, spread and lethality of the virus; (2) rec-ommendations and curative practices; and (3) management of the pandemic by public administrations and international organizations. In the current infodemic scenario, this research addresses how 8 fact-checking organiza-tions have used Twitter as a tool to combat disinformation in the times of COVID-19: Agência Lupa (Brazil), Chequeado (Argentina), Maldita.es and Newtral (Spain), ColombiaCheck (Colombia), Ecuador Check (Ecuador), El Sabueso - Animal Político (Mexico) and Cotejo (Venezuela). Between March and June 2020, these organizations have published on Twitter on a sus-tained basis, obtaining high engagement figures in the form of retweets and favorites. Multiple hashtags on COVID-19 have been included, including those tags promoted by LATAM Chequea and IFCN (#CoronaVirusFacts and #DatosCoronaVirus) and other generic hashtags aimed at the general public. The contents related to COVID-19 have been the most viralized by users.

Xavier Ramon-Vegas. Lecturer at the Department of Communication of Pompeu Fabra University. He holds a PhD in Communication from the UPF. Member of Journalism Research Group (GRP). His research and teaching focus on journalism ethics, media accountability and sports communication. He has published in academic journals such as Digital Journalism, El Profesional de la Información, Revista Latina de Comunicación Social, Communication & Sport, Ethical Space, Estudios sobre el Mensaje Periodístico or Revista de Comunicación. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Stirling and the University of Glasgow (United Kingdom), the University of Alabama (United States of America) and the IOC Olympic Studies Centre (Switzerland). He has participated in three competitive research projects funded by the Spanish government on media accountability and fact-checking platforms.
Marcel Mauri-Ríos, Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Marcel Mauri-Ríos. He holds a degree in journalism, history and a PhD in communication. He is a professor of journalistic deontology at the Department of Communication of Pompeu Fabra University. Member of Journalism Research Group (GRP). His areas of research are journalistic deontology, accountability, political journalism and the history of journalism. He has been a visiting researcher at different universities and has led competitive projects in the field of the history of journalism, deontology and accountability and disinformation. He has published articles in academic journals and has written books in specialized communication publications.
Ruth Rodríguez-Martínez, Universitat Pompeu Fabra
Ruth Rodríguez-Martínez. Holds a PhD in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid. Lecturer in the Department of Communication of Pompeu Fabra University and member of Journalism Research Group (GRP). Her research focuses on media ethics, fact-checking and cultural journalism. She has participated in various research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Commission. She is the co-principal investigator of the research projects “Accountability and Media Systems in Spain: Real impact and good practices in Spanish Media” (MediaACES, CSO2015-66404-P) and “Media accountability instruments against disinformation: The impact of fact-checking platforms as media accountability tools and curricular proposal (FACCTMedia, PID2019- 106367GB-I00).
