Dialectos del español. A new application to map current variation and change in spanish varie

This paper presents the results of a pilot study conducted to test the research design chosen for the creation of the application Dialectos del español (‘Dialects of Spanish’). A questionnaire created in Google Forms with questions concerning 19 morphosynt actic and 5 lexical variables was launched via social media and was completed by 547 participants from various Spanish - speaking countries. Besides offering data on both studied and hitherto unstudied phenomena in the dialectal and sociolinguistic literatur e, this pilot study tests whether the chosen questions are adequate and precise enough for inclusion in the application. The tested research design will permit to examine not only the geographic distribution of the phenomena under study, but also linguisti c changes affecting them, such as innovations introduced by youngsters or due to national and international migration movements.
