From a historical standpoint, the fantastic tale derives from the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann and their subsequent reception in Europe, with France as a disseminating epicenter. Although the intermedial character of his production have been noted, critics have not sufficiently studied how Hoffmann drew upon Jacques Callot’s etchings in order to express his own aesthetic program. As a contribution to a deeper understanding of hoffmanianism as a phenomenon, from which the fantastic genre originates, I offer in this article an analysis of Hoffmann’s ekphrastic poetics inspired by Callot. I focus on three main paratexts, «Ja[c]ques Callot», the preface to «Die Abenteuer der Silvester-Nacht» and the prologue to the novel Prinzessin Brambilla.
