La conceptualizació de l’objecte d’estudi en la recerca sobre comunicació local a Catalunya (1981-2006): de mesocomunicació a mitjans de proximitat

Josep Àngel Guimerà i Orts

From the birth of contemporary studies about mass communication in Catalonia in the second half of the 70s in the 20th century, the local media have been some of the most frequent objects of study. In fact, it has been said that this is a specific line of research which is considered to be one of the principal contributions of the Principality to knowledge about contemporary communication (Corominas, 1997; Jones, 1998). Despite the marked descriptive nature of the majority of these approaches, within this line of research there have also been attempts to theorize about the object of study. The result has been the appearance of two concepts in the last three decades, mesocommunication and proximity media. This article presents a critical analysis of the birth and development of these concepts, as well as the limitations presented and the contributions made regarding research into communication.
