La conquista de Camagüey por el azúcar, 1898-1926. El impacto ambiental de un milagro económico

Reinaldo Funes Monzote

Resum

This work covers the vast changes in the countryside in the province of Camagüey, Cuba, in the first three decades of the 20th century, as a result of the impact of large-scale sugar production en the land. The most visible and immediate example was the acceleration in the destruction of its still extensive woodlands. Though factors such as extensive stockbreeding and the wood trade were already of influence, these woods had never hitherto been seen to vanish as quickly as occurred from these years, when a wide-reaching network of railways and the largest sugar depots and farms in the world were built.
