Resum


This paper shows the main interpretations about the significance of Latinamerican city square. Merida’s city plaza mayor is taken as example. Traditionally, the square has been showed as a result of the European-hispanic tradition and was used as a sign of the colonial power. Nowadays, on square symbolical interpretation, it has been introduced the native factor, as much for the prehispanic urban influences as for the demographical outstanding place when related with the social uses of the space.
