The article examines different artistic approaches to the “real” through pain and violence. Frequently these approaches backfire, and end up presenting pain as a spectacle. The aim of the article is to outline a series of gestures, less spectacular yet more solid, which, to quote from Palahniuk, can “turn down the volume of the real world” without trivializing it in the process.
