Sobre la relación entre la mujer y la alquimia: del laboratorio al símbolo

Joaquín Pérez Pariente, Ignacio M. Pascual Valderrama

This work explores the connection between women and alchemy, in particular the women alchemists and the symbolic meaning of woman in alchemical works. The work and life of the following women are reviewed: Mary the Jewish; the alchemical couple in Flamel and Mutus Liber; Martine de Bertereau;Christina of Sweden and, finally, Mary Ann Atwood, active in the second half of XIX century. There is an abundant representation of woman in alchemical documents, symbolizing both laboratory work and theoretical aspects. They are associated to the process describing the vitalization of matter but, above all, how woman is a favourite symbol for the world soul, or the spirit of world.
