This paper discusses Fāngyán, the oldest dialectal dictionary in China, considered to have been authored by Yáng!Xióng!(53 B.C.HA.D. 18). It describes how Fāngyán was compiled as well as its basic structure and its linguistic value, and then introduces actual examples of studies of old Chinese dialects
that have used Fāngyán as a linguistic resource in documenting lexical histories and in determining
linguistic distance between dialectal regions
