Definiteness in sorani kurdish and english

Keivan Zahedi, Roghayeh Mehrazmay

Resum

This paper aims to investigate the system of definiteness in two genealogically relative Indo-European languages, namely English and Sorani Kurdish. A questionnaire including Farsi and English sentences was developed in order to gather the required data. 30 Sorani Kurdish speakers answered the questionnaire. Due to the diversity in the Sorani dialect spoken in different regions, this study focused on data gathered from Sorani speakers of Saghez. Results show that the English articles a/an and the used to make noun phrases indefinite and definite respectively, are equivalent to suffixes ek and aka in Sorani. In both languages the generic form of the noun was either without any special article or affix, or formed by
a bare plural noun.
